Face Coverings

Executive Order No. 180, Increasing Face Covering Requirements to Prevent the Rapid Spread of COVID-19, goes into effect on Wednesday, November 25 at 5:00PM and runs through Friday, December 11. UNC Wellness Centers has updated our mask requirement pursuant to the Governor’s order. Effective November 25 at 5:00PM, face coverings must be worn at all times while members are exercising in the facility (except while swimming). Read the FAQs for Executive Order 180 provided by the State of NC. Please see below for additional FAQs specific to our centers.

What are the major changes under this Order in regards to using the Wellness Centers?
Previously, masks were not required to be worn during strenuous exercise. Masks must now be worn at all times with the only exception being during swimming in the main pool.

To clarify, masks must now be worn:

  • during aqua aerobics classes,
  • while water walking or running in a lap lane,
  • in the whirlpool,
  • in the sauna,
  • during all levels of activity including strenuous activity,
  • and in all other indoor areas of the centers.

Can I wear a face shield?
Based on recommendations from the CDC, face shields do not meet the requirements for face coverings. Face covering means a covering of the nose and mouth that is secured to the head with ties, straps, or loops over the ears and fits snugly against the side of a person’s face. A face covering can be made of a variety of synthetic and natural fabrics, including cotton silk, or linen. Ideally, a face covering has two (2) or more layers. A face covering may be factory-made, sewn by hand, or can be improvised from household items such as scarfs, bandanas t-shirts, sweatshirts, or towels.

Do I have to wear a face covering when I participate in an outdoor class or exercise outside (i.e. on the turf field)?
Under the Executive Order, you will not be required to wear a face covering while exercising outdoors in a group fitness class or while exercising on your own as long as you maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others that do not reside in your household.

Can I use the wellness centers without a mask if I qualify for an exception noted under the Executive Order?
If you qualify for an exception under the Executive Order, you will not be able to use the wellness centers. However, there are other options for you to stay active if you are unable to wear a face covering at all times while in the centers.  These options include:
