Sports-Specific Training

We offer a number of programs for individuals who are interested in sport specific training. While each program is unique, all programs utilize our award-winning facility and some of the Triangle’s best instructors.

Triathlon - Our triathlon training programs are led by top triathlon coaches from the area. These programs typically run from 4-6 weeks and include a variety of learning formats. Classroom sessions, nutritional resources, demonstrations, technique training, drills, strength and cardiovascular training, and practice triathlons are all typically represented in these programs. Programs are often timed to build towards a specific area triathlon. Call 966-5500 or e-mail wellness@unch.unc.edu for full details on the next available program.

Skiing - During the fall and winter months we offer several snow-sport training classes. These are designed for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Some specific programs may be more geared to beginners, while others may be more appropriate for intermediate to advanced snow sport enthusiasts. Masters Swim - The free Masters Swim classes are a fun way to improve swimming fitness and technique.  Coaches provide challenging workouts of 2000 to 3000 yards that focus mainly on the freestyle. Stroke technique is critiqued via poolside coaching and videotape analysis to help swimmers become more efficient and improve their stroke.  Available on a first come-first served basis, classes are held on Mondays (6:30-7:30 am), Wednesdays (6:30-7:30 am) and Thursdays (7:30-8:30 pm) in the recreational pool.  Due to the popularity of the morning sessions, a “ticket” is required for the Monday and Wednesday classes and can be obtained from the front desk beginning an hour before the class start time.  No ticket is required for the Thursday evening class.   

All master swimmers must be at least 22 years old, able to swim 50 yards (1 pool lap or 2 pool lengths) continuously in less than 75 seconds, and able to swim at least 2000 yards (40 pool laps or approximately 1.2 miles) in an hour.  Individuals who cannot meet these minimum requirements will be encouraged to participate in other adult aquatics programs for additional training prior to joining the class.  

Team UNC Wellness Multisport Club

Whether you're a developing or experienced endurance athlete; compete in running races, triathlons, bike events, or adventure racing; or just want to learn more about these sports, we have the club for you!  Our Multisport Club provides a unique and fun way to learn more about these sports, find training partners, learn tips from seasoned athletes and USA-Triathlon-certified coaches, and participate in sports-specific group exercises and clinics.  Both Wellness Center members and non-members are encouraged to join.

Take advantage of our free group training sessions, including masters swim practices, indoor spin and trainer rides, outdoor group rides, and social runs.  Participate in one or more of our sports-specific clinics and workshops offered at reduced cost to Club members. Come train and learn with your friends and make some new ones.  Join us as we volunteer, compete as team members, and proudly display our team flags and tent at local events. 

We also have monthly club meetings for that feature expert presentations on topics important to endurance athletes, including running, swimming, cycling, nutrition, flexibility, strength training, workout program design, injury prevention, and equipment choice and maintenance. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:15pm to 8:30pm in the classroom at the UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont. Membership includes entry to the monthly club meetings, discounts on selected clinics and races, a free wicking workout top, and the option to purchase team uniforms at cost, thanks to our generous sponsors UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont, FleetFeet Carrboro, Triangle Multisport, Sage Endurance, and Swim for Smiles.
