Incident at UNC Wellness Center at NW Cary

Valued Members and Community:

Last night, after 6 p.m., an armed individual was apprehended by Cary Police at UNC Wellness Center at Northwest Cary after breaching a door to the facility and gaining access to a mechanical room. No one was harmed during the incident, the individual never had access to the main facility, and there is no indication that he had any connection to UNC Wellness Center at Northwest Cary staff or members.

Upon identifying the threat, vigilant UNC Wellness Center staff members immediately followed appropriate emergency code procedures, moved members to interior rooms, locked all doors, and notified the Cary Police, who responded within minutes and subdued the individual. UNC Health Care thanks all staff at UNC Wellness Center at Northwest Cary for their quick actions to protect Wellness Center members and staff.

UNC Health Care also thanks Cary Police for their quick response and resolution to this terrifying event. UNC Health Care will continue to assist the police with the incident in any way it can.
UNC Wellness Center at Northwest Cary was secured in the hours after the event and has resumed regular business operations.

Safety and security for the Wellness Centers has not changed. However, to support the needs of the staff and wellness center members, a UNC Hospital Police Officer will be present in the Northwest Cary Wellness Center through the weekend to assist in addressing various questions and concerns.
