Stay Active during the Winter Months

With the winter months and holiday season upon us, it is important to have a plan of attack to prevent you from falling off your fitness routine and having to start from scratch in the New Year.  How does one do this?  Make a plan!  You must be prepared and ready to stay active when it’s too cold to get out of bed for that morning run or the sun sets earlier and you would rather be home cozy by the fireplace.  Develop a way to maintain that motivation to keep your body moving when you least feel like it.

Prepare for the change in season by stocking up on layered workout clothes.  New socks, sneakers, fleece, long sleeves, gloves, and hats will help keep you warm during the first part of your outdoor workout. You can peel the layers back as your body begins to adjust to the temperature.  Always be sure to warm up before your workout to reduce the risk of injury.  Cold temperatures will cause your muscles will tighten and injuries can occur.  Be sure to dress for the weather and get your body ready to move.

Staying hydrated is a must!  As your body tries to adjust to changing seasons it is important to remember to keep your water intake high and eat the right foods to nourish and fuel your body for your everyday activity.  This will keep your energy elevated, as well as your mood, and your body in a consistent flow.

Finally, revisit your goals.  It is important to check in with yourself to make sure you are on the right track to staying fit and healthy.  If you are stuck in rut, try changing up your fitness routine by participating in a group exercise class or changing your strength routine, or even adding something new and fresh to your nutritional plan.

Bottom line, try different things that will make living the healthy lifestyle more exciting, so you are continually motivated to exercise and eat well!
