How Much Exercise is Needed to Burn off those Thanksgiving Calories?
Tuesday November 18, 2014
For once, let’s not lie to ourselves about how we’re going to “take it easy” this Thanksgiving. Most of us are going to give thanks by overindulging. It’s okay, splurging once in awhile is fine as long as your normal diet and exercise strategy balance out the occasional indulgence.
But just how much exercise are you going to need to burn off those extra holiday calories? According to the Calorie Control Council, a typical Thanksgiving dinner contains an astonishing 4,500 calories. Since most people burn only 2000 calories in a day, you can see how Thanksgiving can add on some extra padding.
In a moderate exercise session, such as a brisk walking or casual swimming the average person burns around 450 calories in 1 hour. At this rate, it would take about 10 sessions to burn off your Thanksgiving meal. If you workout more vigorously by running or doing high intensity circuit training the average person will burn 810 calories in 1 hour. You can burn off your entire meal in just 5 or 6 sessions with these activities.
So, what will you do this Thanksgiving? Will you actually take it easy this year or will you give yourself a pass and spend some extra hours in the gym burning off those extra calories? Hmmmm…that is a hard one!
