Stay Fit This Holiday Season
Thursday November 21, 2013
With the holiday season upon us, it is time to start planning on how to keep that summer body you worked so hard for as we head into winter. On average, Americans gain 10-15 pounds during the holiday season. How do you keep from falling off the wagon and losing all your hard work? How about join our Healthy Holiday Challenge starting November 25th! UNC Wellness Centers wants to keep you motivated to work out and say fit this holiday season, while also giving you the opportunity to win great prizes! You can sign up for this free program at the fitness desk of your facility.
So, what is the Healthy Holiday Challenge all about? Here is the scoop:
This program will include fitness and nutrition handouts, a special 6-week workout card, and information on Health Education events and stress management for incentive. You will be encouraged to exercise more often during the busy holiday season. Each time you perform 30+ minutes of cardio, perform 20 minutes or more of strength training, take a group exercise class or attend a health education session, you will receive a stamp on your workout card. Fitness Instructors will be responsible for giving stamps and can also stamp if someone records information while on vacation. Sign-ups will be allowed until the end of the first day of the program. Top 10 members with the most stamps win prizes when the challenge is over.
During the holiday season, it is easy to pack on the pounds. Holiday weight gain results from consuming more calories than usual and not exercising regularly. Physical activity is a major predictor of who gains, maintains or loses weight during the holiday season.
One pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, which means:
- A 200-pound person walking three miles per day at a moderate pace for one week can burn almost 2,300 calories
- A 300-pound person walking three miles per day at a moderate pace for one week can burn almost 3,500 calories
Also, if prizes are not enough to motivate you, UNC Wellness Centers has certified personal trainers ready to keep your on track and help you reach your fitness goals.
